OOW Rocks!

OK, this is my first blog post so y'all be kind.

I just have to say how blown away I was by the Oracle Open World (OOW) conference this year in SF. For lots of reasons. I just want to thank all the great presenters who answered my questions and were gracious enough to give me an email address to write to with my "issues". I mean, these poor folks must be swamped by emails from people like me. A special mention to Mary Ann Davidson, Colleen Murray, Jim Marion, Barry Hiern and Andrew Rothstein, all Oracle folks.

The most exciting session for me was Barry Hiern's "Enhancing Application Users Experience with Web 2.0 Capabilities" on Thursday morning. It's the way forward! Like a portal for all your applications, with single sign on, but better, because you can embed bits of applications in the other applications even when they're from different vendors! And there's a lot of reuse of existing code, not reinventing the wheel. For any non-techie folk reading this I hope you get the gist, that maybe one day (soon) you can have all your favorite stuff on one browser page, including email, RSS feeds, plus any business applications you use for your work, IM etc. I feel like I've been in the dark ages and now I can see the light! (I just hope it's not a train...)

The other thing that blew me away was the Oracle corporation's generosity in opening TEN of San Francisco's museums to the public last Saturday free of charge. Not to mention the world's biggest company party on Wednesday night. The cruel part about that was presenting Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Nicks with Mick Fleetwood, and Billy Joel ALL at the same time. I had such a good time, and I learned about a wonderful performer Angelique Kidjo for the first time. What a dancer and singer with her African rythmns and awesome band!

I realize more than ever how important these conferences are - as a software architect I am setting the design of products that will be in use at the Lab for several years and I want to deliver the best product possible to the people in the trenches who have to use it and don't want to get ergonomic injuries or a sore head trying to figure it out.

Thought for the day: "Once you solve problem number 1, problem number 2 becomes problem number 1...."(author forgotten, sorry,if anyone knows please tell me!)
